The 31st edition of the Miami Open will be played at the Key Biscane, Florida, United States from 24th March to 4th April.
The Miami Open marks the end of the long winter hardcourt season before the tennis stars head of to Europe for the claycourt season.
The defending champions and world number ones are Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams.
The notable top 10 absentees from the ATP side are world.no 2 and 17 time Grand Slam Winner Roger Federer and U.S.Open Champion and world no.10 Marin Cilic. From the WTA side world no.4 and two time Wimbledon champion Petra Kvitova is the only notable absentee.
Fatigue may play an important factor as this tournament started just within 48 hours of the conclusion of the previous event(Indian Wells Masters 1000) and the players will be tired having flown the entire breadth of America to make it to Miami(Indian Wells Masters is held in California).
Based on that "superman" Novak Djokovic should be tired but we all know that isn't going to happen. With the absence of Roger Federer in this tournament the fans at Miami will be expecting a mouthwatering clash between Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic(the top two seeds) in the finals.
However wether Rafa's surgically repaired knees are able to hold up to the strain of hard court tennis remains to be seen. The absence of Roger Federer also opens up a spot in he semi finals which can be taken by rising stars like Kei Nishikori(world no.5 ) or Milos Raonic(world no.6 and the man who beat Nadal in the quarter finals at Indian Wells) Or will someone new emerge ?? Maybe Borna Corcic ?
The outcome of the event won't have any ramifications on the world no.1 ranking as Rafael Nadal(world no.3 and second seed is a distant 7000 ranking points behind Djokovic(maximum possible 1000 points on offer in the tournament) No smart person would bet against Djokovic claiming his 5th title at Miami as he is on red hot form and has only lost one match since the start of the Australian Open(Federer beat him in Dubai).
Most titles
ATP : Andre Agassi -6
WTA : Serena Williams -7
